It’s our job to raise good, happy kids. When it seems like each day is primarily spent keeping them alive, anything beyond that is an insurmountable mountain. But still, it’s our job. To be their safe place—to show them love and happiness—to give them the confidence they need to succeed all their lives.
Let me be the first to admit I’m not Supermom. People see this young, “fit” girl herding five mini-me’s and think wow, she must be amazing. But nope, sorry, I’m just like you. I still freak out about things that shouldn’t phase me (on a daily basis, mind you), I still lose my cool, I still prefer easy vs healthy meals. And I definitely don’t have a handle on how to raise kids just yet. The last seven years have taught me a LOT, but I’m not SuperMom.
The one biggest thing I have learned, though? Kids are like little puppy dogs, they’ll keep loving you and forgiving you, over and over, no matter how undeserving you feel.
So here’s the one “Supermom” thing I can give you—the one thing that has saved my relationship with my kids over and over, and given them inner confidence no matter what is going on. I can literally see their demeanor change in a few seconds when I do this.
When things are rough, even if you’re upset and they’re upset and everybody’s unhappy with each other, get down on their level. Sit on the floor, scoop them into your lap, and show them you care.
Then just play together. Put aside the “work” of the day for a little while, no matter how long your to-do list is, and go play.
See that light in their eyes? That’s hope restored. That’s confidence from within. That’s knowing their safe place is still their safe place, and having a more stable core to do and deal with everything else in their day.
Because you were Supermom, for that moment. Because you are Supermom.
Today’s moments of awesome brought to you by Boden—our new absolute favorite kids’ clothing of all time. I didn’t know when we signed up for this how head-over-heels in love we’d fall. Though they say they’re “the new British,” there’s more to it than that. This is by far the most durable clothing we’ve seen in our now 7+ years of parenting—it holds up to everything. No itchy neck tags, adorable prints, and just plain warm, witty Britishness. Plus they’re machine washable (win!) and super comfy! Our girls wanted to sleep in these outfits. I let them. (Sue me.)
We also love the way the unique prints let kids express their personalities. #2 gravitates toward pinks and bold colors, while #4 is our airy little fairy. And you can totally see that in their Mini Boden outfits.
If you’d like a chance to fall in love with Mini Boden, too, they’re giving away three $500 vouchers right now. You can enter via the widget below—I-C will randomly select 3 winners from all program entries and will handle fulfillment of the winning prizes.
