We’ve been supplementing our home preschool curriculum with a few different apps, mainly teaching letters/phonics and numbers. There are a lot of really great, really well designed apps out there, and it’s easy to spend a lot of time browsing the App Store in search of just the right one. Kids Academy is one of the best I have found for teaching young children.
My just-turned-5-year-old (#1) and my 3-1/2-year-old (#2) both love it. #1 gets more out of it since he is doing some kindergarten curriculum already, but #2 does several of the activities also, and even #3, who is only newly 2 years old, enjoys the more basic parts.
Kids Academy basically offers a variety of digital worksheets related to letters, numbers, and shapes, with some phonics supplementation and other integrated activities. I love that it rewards for accuracy when drawing letters, numbers, shapes, etc, and encourages correct handwriting (starting at the top of a letter, etc). The graphics are really well done (which is important to me as a graphic designer), and it’s easy to navigate. I think they could have done without a couple of the ad locations, but my kids haven’t tapped any of them yet, and it’s not distracting enough to kill the experience. Plus, you can have a different profile for each child to track their progress, and switching between them is super easy.
In a nutshell…
Perfect preschool supplement and educational resource. Absolutely brilliantly done. Invaluable learning app for young children. As a homeschooling mom of 4, this is one of my favorite apps to teach my kids with.
NOTE: While my kids are using a stylus in the photos, Kids Academy is perfect for simple finger taps/drawing as well. We just wanted to teach them how to hold a pen as part of their learning. :)
