A few days ago marks the one year anniversary of the day we left the US to travel abroad with our family of 7. So many adventures. So many experiences. All from backpacks.
Ours is the path less traveled—most families wouldn't dream of selling everything to pack into carryons in order to see the world—especially with small children. And yes, it is challenging at times. But as they say, when the risks are great, the rewards are great. And boy, have we seen rewards.
We took the bold move of selling our house (and everything in it) back in November 2014. Everyone thought we were a bit crazy, but it was something we had been wanting to do for a long time. Since then, we were "homeless" for about 9 months, staying with family—during the course of which time we had another baby, packed and repacked (and repacked again), got rid of more, second-guessed ourselves numerous times, almost didn't fit everything into our bags, and then we were off. Five little kids, two adventurous parents, and a long, crazy road ahead.
We've been close to broke many times, we've been up late making ends meet (work doesn't sleep, even when you're traveling), and we've seen some incredible, breathtaking sights—as a family—that we will remember together for years to come… That have made it all worth it. Nothing could have prepared us for the rollercoaster, but the thrill of riding it day after day just keeps growing.
We're far from done. Our path may change, it may swerve unexpectedly into new territories, but we will always be adventurers. It's sealed in our very souls—it's a part of who we are. It's a boldness we can't express, but can't contain. You could say it's wanderlust with rocket fuel.
Speaking of fuel. Every single day has been fueled by coffee. Because parenthood is one thing, but parenthood while traveling and working "from home" is a whole other ballgame. And basically requires no less than two cups a day. Just sayin.
So that's why I'm basically over the moon that our amazing sponsor gave us a sampling of their brand new Dunkin' Dark® for this post. It's bold just like us, and it requires minimal effort just like our grab-it-and-go lifestyle. It's rich, smooth, and doesn't have the bitter notes you find in most dark roasts. Plus it contains 30% Rainforest Alliance Certified™ coffee. You could say it's the perfect cup o' joe.
Becky Hammon shares our sentiments. Another coffee lover not afraid to take risks, she is the first female full-time assistant coach in the history of men's professional basketball—not because she was content to live a "normal" life, but because she chose to take bold risks. You can learn more about Becky's story on Dunkin'. It's pretty amazing.
But all that to say, my challenge to you today is this—make a risky decision that you've been pushing around in your head for too long, and do something extraordinary—even if that starts with just one little step you can make right now, and another you can make tomorrow, and another you can make next week. Shape your own path and keep moving forward. Be bold. Get on the thrill ride.
