Once you purchase your cloth diapers, you’ll need to prep them. But what does this mean?
How to Prep
Most cloth diapers have instructions right on the packaging, but a good rule of thumb is to wash your covers once and your inserts 3-6 times before use. This removes any residues from the factory, and increases absorbency in the inserts. When in doubt check the packaging or website to be sure.
If you’re buying your diapers used (Craigslist, a friend, etc), I’d go ahead and wash them at least once before using also, just to make sure there aren’t any residues the previous owner didn’t manage to get out. You can use normal cloth diaper detergent (referenced here), or actually run a strip cycle–which I’ll explain later in the guide.
Besides all the wash prep, you may also want to set up a special space for your cloth diaper essentials (or “stash”). We’ve used anything from a shelf in the bathroom closet to a basket or bin system.
