While talking to a friend recently, I realized that in spite of having 5 kids (and having this blog over 3-1/2 years now), I don’t think I’ve ever actually written a “new mom essentials” guide! That changes now. So get ready for this mom of 5’s top picks for new motherhood…
Dear New Mom, if I could give you a care package… This is what would be in it.
You know you need things like diapers and baby clothes—these are the little extras that will put your new life with this tiny person over the top.
I know, sounds kind of silly, but you’ll be thankful for the extra support when you’re adjusting to having that little bundle out of your tummy instead of inside it those first few weeks. I was surprised how sore my arms got so quickly, holding something so small! You don’t have to get a special breastfeeding pillow, any good pillow will work if you prop it under your arm right, but there are several breastfeeding-specific pillows, too.
Though there’s a lot of stigma around baby carriers these days, I still swear by them for those first few months especially—they keep baby close and snuggly, and were about the only way I got anything done for quite a while! We have some great video reviews of several baby carriers here, but I LOVE some of the new kangaroo-like shirts available now, too (for both moms and dads!).
When your arms need a break (and you need to rest), you’ll be glad you have this. With some of the better baby swings, they can even make baby feel like you’re still carrying him. Pro tip: tuck a clothing item with your scent (like a once-worn shirt) in next to baby, so he feels like you’re still near him.
If you choose to breastfeed, you’ll thank God for this stuff. No, really, I mean it. Have a tube on hand, even if you don’t think you’ll use it—cause chances are, at one of those first late-night feedings, it will be your saving grace. Another important note: line up a good friend or nurse/midwife now to help you through the first week of breastfeeding, and keep yourself from making the same mistake I did in thinking you can do it all yourself.
You’ll need wipes for a lot of things, not just little tushies—and WaterWipes (now available at Walmart.com) will see you through all of them. With 99.9% pure Irish water and 0.1% grapefruit extract, you can feel safe wiping faces, bums, pacifiers, spills, and other areas that need a little extra care right now, too. How I wish these were around when we had our first! But you can take full advantage of them now, mama.
We all want our babies to be safe and happy, and we’re so happy we’ve found WaterWipes for this reason. We’ve been using them over a year now, and they are by far our favorite wipe—not just for their chemical-free nature, but their durability and versatility. Now that they’re becoming available at even more retailers (like Walmart.com), it’s easier for all parents to have a better choice in the baby aisle.
To help you experience WaterWipes as well, Influence Central is giving away five $100 Walmart gift cards. You can enter using the widget below.
I-C will randomly select winners from all program entries and will facilitate fulfillment of the winning prizes (5 winners).
