Looking back on my life before becoming a mom, I wonder what I did with all my spare time. Everything changes when you have a baby, and though it’s amazing and incredible, it’s chaotic and hard to find a moment for yourself again. Thinking about self-care beyond basic hygiene seems impossible at times—I remember wanting to hit people who told me to get more sleep or take some time for myself “when I could.” So I get it.
The first time I got a shower after my first baby was born was when he was about a week old, and he screamed the entire time. I felt so helpless, not only for him but for myself. How was I supposed to do ANYTHING ever again? I thought my entire life was now destined to revolve around this tiny being—and I know many new moms can feel this same helplessness. It does get better, but not immediately. And the more kids you have, the less ever-so-brief breaks occur in our 24/7 job as moms.
But, just like a 12+ hour work day without any breaks, we get run down quick when we don’t take time for ourselves. Though it seems impossible, we have to find ways to keep ourselves sane with any small amount of self-care we can manage. Writing, reading, even being able to drink an entire hot cup of coffee uninterrupted. Small victories to recharge our exhausted core.
If you’ve got even as little as 5 minutes to yourself (maybe right after baby goes down for a nap, before you pass out yourself), there’s a new way to carve out some “me” time through MyYogaWorks. This carefully curated collection of over 1,000 online yoga classes fit any schedule, and can be done anywhere—and are streamable from any laptop, tablet, phone or TV.
After looking through the extensive offerings on MyYogaWorks.com, I was impressed by not only the amount of content, but the quality of it. You can filter classes by almost any interest or target area, choose by time requirement, or follow a “journey,” which is essentially a short course organized from classes related to a certain focus. Your account tracks your progress and lets you know what’s next or what you might enjoy based on what you’ve done so far, and all of the instruction within the videos is very easy to understand—even for a beginner like myself. You can go at your own pace, whenever you have a few minutes to yourself.
Even better, MyYogaWorks has a whole section of classes devoted to prenatal, postnatal, and “mom” yoga. Easy classes you can do in a short period of time, with or without baby (yes, even if your baby never leaves your arms, you can still have a bit of “me” time!).
Just like deep breathing can help you during childbirth, it can also help you manage the stresses of parenthood. Even though I’ve never really been big on yoga, I know this to be true. So, it stands to reason that taking a few minutes a day to just breathe can help us refocus and block out some of the crazy that is parenting.
If you want to try MyYogaWorks for yourself, use the promo code YOGA49 at signup until November 28, 2016 to get one year of access for only $49 (regularly $150). That’s less than you spend on Netflix (and way better for you)! You can also find out more about MyYogaWorks on their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
